Coldplay concert in Omaha, NE

I went to a Coldplay concert in Omaha, NE last weekend (6.13.09) that I thought I’d provide some live songs from. They have several songs from Viva la Vida that they played at the concert on their website for download that you could always play over stereo bluetooth on your newly updated iPhone. Enough with the talk, here’s the pictures and videos (I uploaded most of these to my FB account for you imported note readers).

I uploaded several photos of the trip to my Facebook account (which also has a nifty new username which FB oddly gave its users the ability to create the Friday before my trip). I’ve embedded several of them in this post, but if you’d like to see the whole album, you can access the public version too.

Apple releases 3.0 iPhone and iPod touch firmware

After an all night wait for some, Apple has finally released the 3.0 Firmware upgrade for the iPhone and iPod touch. It was scheduled to be released last night around midnight (or at least that’s what everyone was hoping for), but Apple has kept us waiting almost 12 hours after the expected release time. Midnight in California would be 2am here in CST, the scheduled time. I’m downloading at approximately 1pm here, 11am in California at the Apple headquarters. I’m hoping their servers hold out until the download is complete but it seems to be doing pretty well so far. I will update with a few screenshots after installing 3.0.

If anyone wants to check the current version released, someone has designed a handy tool that pulls data right off the Apple server to check the current version: http://1strule.org/iPhoneFirmware.php. It may not be much use now that 3.0 has gone public, but it deserves a link for the effort.

Update: It seems Apple may have beefed up their servers a little for the millions wanting to download, or maybe I got to be the first lucky few to connect, but I downloaded the 230mb in about 10 minutes. That was before I got the network connection error after I forgot to turn off ESET Smart Security. If you’re getting an error downloading iPhone updates, turn off ESET before the download finishes and it should finish and verify successfully.

Update: “dude, this is cool!” 3.0 contains stereo Bluetooth capability as promised, meaning ALL sounds coming out your iPhone can be played on a stereo. Pandora, your iPod, even the keyboard clicks as I write this can be played on my stereo! If you’re having trouble with the connect to iTunes screen, keep trying. Apples servers are swamped right now. Try and catch ‘em during a break. Otherwise, get on at 4am.

iPhone 3G S

iPhone 3G S Voice control

Apple revealed the new iPhone 3G S recently, providing support for copy and paste (why wasn’t it there already?), Video capture (which also allows direct posting to YouTube), faster load times for apps, and voice control allowing shuffling between songs, genius playlist creation, etc. I’m going to have serious technolust after the June 19th release of the 3G S.

Yes, technolust is a real word if it’s defined by Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=technolust). The quote under the definition even has “iPhone” in it.

Anyway, Philip Schiller, working for Apple as a worldwide product marketing specialist, revealed the new model at the Apple developers conference in San Francisco, saying “The ‘S’ in the new iPhone stands for speed as we have made some significant improvements to the phone in both hardware and software.”

Apple did listen to many of the complaints of the current 3G model owners regarding everything from battery life to storage space. The new phone comes in either 16GBs or 32GBs, double it’s predecessor.

While this new phone looks cool, I think I’ll probably settle for my current 3G model. I’m jealous of the auto focusing camera and all, but even if I wanted to fork over the $200 for the fancy MMS supporting, YouTube uploading, Voice Controlled device, I’m probably locked in to AT&T’s plan for another year or so. You just shot yourself in the foot there AT&T. Yes, it has longer battery life, yes, it even has a compass and a search engine that searches the entire phone, but I’d be willing to bet just about anything that there will be another model next year that’s even better.

Still, if anyone has an extra $200 or $300 bucks lying around, I’d be happy to take it off your hands and go get myself one of these.
